Taxus baccata raw material bonsai, commonly known as English yew, which is an evergreen, dicotyledonous shrub. It has dark green needle-shaped foliage. Although the Yew is considered coniferous, it does not produce cones with a tree stem, but a single seed surrounded by a berry-like red aryl (fleshy seed coat).
The Yew prefers a sufficiently bright place, but it can also tolerate shade, although in deep shade the foliage will be less dense. In a warm, dry climate, we need to protect the Yew from the strong afternoon sun in the summer. In winter, the Taxus should be protected from hard frost and cold winds. Soft roots and foliage can severely suffer from such harsh winter conditions. Because Yew is evergreen, it needs enough light even in winter. Water as soon as the soil dries, but do not keep its roots constantly moist. It is recommended to spray / water the foliage without lime. Yew tolerates pH between 5 and 8 the most. In summer, new shoots can be cut back, old needles can be removed to allow enough sunlight to reach the inside of the tree, which will help with budding and the appearance of new branches. During the growth period, organic fertilizers such as e.g. Biogold nutrient or liquid nutrient solution such as e.g. Matsu Bio-Green or Matsu Fish Emulsion.
We recommend Akadama + Kiryu mixture as a planting medium due to its good water permeability.
