This Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa' came from Takamatsu in Japan, from Koji Hiramatsu Gardening. Planted in japanese handmade Tokoname pot. 'Itoigawa' can be considered one of the most sought after junipers due to its unique soft "cloud" foliage in Japan. Itoigawa is native to Japan, the Kurile Islands, and the Itoigawa Peninsula. It prefers stony, well-drained soils, so Kiryuzuna is the most optimal for it or the Akadama. In its natural range, it most often grows near the sea. The foliage is needle-like on young trees and scaly on older trees. Its fruit is a small, hard, bluish berry that is recommended to be removed due to energy consumption. Wiring is best done in the fall or early winter so that the branches can get used to their new position while the tree is dormant. The transplant is best done in the spring. If necessary, juniper can be transplanted in late summer-early autumn, as this is when it enters a period of root regeneration.
Pines and other conifers grow along with a symbiotic fungus that grows on the root ball of the tree. If this fungus is not present, the tree may be destroyed.
The Itoigawa below boasts a popular "deadwood" pattern on. 'Jin' and 'Shari' are also part of this tree.
