Zanthoxyllum piperitum- Japanese pepper
It is native to central and eastern Asia, from the Himalayas to Japan. Its crusted, brownish-brown, winged leaves rubbed with a pleasant, spicy pepper smell. Its small flowers are yellowish-green.
It can be kept indoors, it requires heat and light. It can be placed in a semi-shaded place outdoors in Hungary during the summer. It is a water demanding species, always keep its soil evenly moist. Pruning can be done from spring to autumn, cutting the elongated shoots into two pairs of leaves. We also wiring it at the spring, making sure that its branches can easily break. Every two years, in the spring, it is advisable to transplant it to akadama or a bonsai soil mixture. Nutrient supply can be solved with BIOGOLD or OSMOCOTE.
