Ilex serrata bonsai precursor. Ilex is an outdoor plant that we need to plant outdoors all year round. It needs a lot of sunlight for proper crop development, but on the hottest summer days you need to be protected from strong, extreme heat and sun. During the autumn-winter period, the red fruits on the bare branches provide a beautiful view. Ilex can withstand some frost for a short time (up to -5 ° C), but should be protected from very low temperatures when planted in a bonsai bowl. It may be worth keeping it in a winter coldhouse or in an unheated enclosure. When it comes to watering, make sure your soil doesn’t dry out. Akadama + Kiryuzuna mixture is ideal for planting media with good drainage. Once the soil surface has begun to dry, moderately water it. Organic fertilizers or liquid feeds (eg Biogold or Bio-green) are also required and recommended for Ilex during the growing season. Wiring is best done from fall to spring because the leaves come off a light touch when we try to wire the branches along with the foliage.
