Crataegus monogyna, or Hawthorn in handcrafted japanese bonsai pot. Hawthorn is a deciduous shrub with thorns belonging to the rose family, which is quite adaptable, has spectacular flowers and a bright red fruit. It can also be an ideal choice for beginners. Hawthorn prefers moist, well-drained soil. For planting recommended to use Akadama + Kiryuzuna. Soil of hawthorns should always be moist, but they don’t like overwatering. Hawthorns prefer full sunlight, but also feel comfortable in filtered light. For healthy flowering and yield, a full sunny location may be more optimal. It responds very well to pruning and can become dense and bushy relatively quickly.
In May we can admire their small white fragrant flowers and in autumn their bright red fruits. It is an interesting fact that the buds of the hawthorn are not defined. Circumstances determine whether the buds turn into flowers, thorns, or leaves. Therefore, if you get a strong pruning of the plant or prune the roots, the buds that want to fall into the flower will come out as new leaves.
