Larix decidua, commonly known as European larch. Larch belongs to the tall coniferous trees, most of which are deciduous and not evergreen. Before it drops its leaves, it turns golden yellow in the fall. Larch is a popular bonsai because of its rapidly thickening trunk, beautiful flaky bark, yellow fall color, and delicate bare branching in winter. Larch grows best in full sun, preferably in the shade during the hottest hours in summer. Larix trees are very frost resistant, but in winter they need to be protected from a combination of excessive rain. Larch should be watered thoroughly when the soil is dry. Larix doesn’t like very calcareous water. However, its regular pruning is well tolerated and does not belong to the delicate trees. If larger branches need to be pruned, this should be done in winter or early spring, even more so the tree would start to grow. Akadama + Kiryuzuna mixture is ideal for planting and Fish-emulsion fertilizer is recommended during the growing season.
