Metasequoia glyptostroboides, commonly known as The Dawn Redwood. Dawn redwoods are very tall trees in nature with straight habitus with soft needle-shaped foliage. Redwoods are native to China and are among the deciduous pines. It is very popular as a bonsai, in most cases for group planting, effective in the ‘Yose ue’ style (forest style). Taking care of Metasequoia bonsai is otherwise quite simple. This bonsai tree species grows relatively quickly and tolerates pruning. Metasequoia is an outdoor bonsai and is ideal for novice bonsaios. Fertilize abundantly with Biogold or BonsaiMaster liquid fertilizer during the growth period, essential for faster growth. Metasequoia bonsai need a lot of water during the summer and should be watered frequently, recommended in the morning and evening. It is especially popular in a sunny and bright place, but it is worth placing it in the shade during the hottest weeks of the summer. In winter, mammoth pine should be protected from frost, especially if planted in a bonsai bowl. The soil should be kept as wet as possible. On the other hand, be careful not to over-water them as this can lead to root rot. The formal straight habitus is characteristic of Dawn Redwood in nature and even when grown as bonsai. Many new buds can be brought in, especially near scars caused by pruning. However, it is recommended to remove all excess buds. Longer knotted twigs should be pruned in the spring to allow new buds to sprout. The branches are fragile, so wiring not necessarily recommended for beginners due to the risk of the branches breaking off.
