Pseudocydonia sinensis – Chinese Quince Bonsai in Neagari Style

Pseudocydonia sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese quince, is a deciduous outdoor bonsai species belonging to the rose family (Rosaceae). It is highly valued for its year-round ornamental appeal. In spring, it produces charming pink blossoms, followed by large, fragrant fruits that ripen from late summer into autumn. Its foliage turns brilliant shades of orange and red in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal display.

This specimen has been trained in the Neagari (exposed root) style, where the striking above-ground roots form an integral part of the composition, giving the tree a distinctive and dramatic appearance.

The Chinese quince thrives in a bright, sunny location with good air circulation. It is an outdoor bonsai and should be kept outside throughout the year. While it tolerates moderate frost, bonsai grown in shallow containers should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures and cold, drying winds, as the root system is more vulnerable than that of trees growing in the ground.

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during summer when the tree is flowering and developing fruit. During this period, its water requirements increase significantly, so the soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. Regular fertilization throughout the growing season is recommended. Organic bonsai fertilizers such as Biogold, or liquid fertilizers such as BioGreen, are particularly beneficial during flowering and fruit development.

For healthy root growth and optimal drainage, a well-aerated bonsai substrate is recommended, such as a mixture of Akadama and Kiryu. With proper care, Pseudocydonia sinensis develops into an exceptional bonsai, admired for its elegant flowers, ornamental fruit, vibrant autumn foliage, and distinctive exposed-root character.
