Korean hornbeam bonsai material - Carpinus coreana
Carpinus coreana, commonly known as Korean hornbeam, is a deciduous tree native to Asia. The beautiful pleated foliage makes Korean hornbeam particularly useful in group plantings and for shaping certain bonsai designs. Hornbeam species vary in growth rate, which is especially important if you want to grow a bonsai with a larger, thicker trunk. Carpinus coreana is very popular for its small leaves and intensively branching growth pattern, but it should be remembered that it is a slower growing hornbeam and usually takes twice as long as other species to reach a similar, thicker trunk diameter. This bonsai will be appreciated not only by beginners, but by all levels of bonsai mastery and is a perfect addition to any outdoor garden.
The tree is characterized by its small, light green serrated leaves that turn spectacular colors in the fall. The fall color ranges from red and orange to yellowish bronze. Its bark is smooth, gray, and wavy. Mature hornbeam specimens bear white, hop-like flowers in spring and produce seed pods that are attractive additions to fall and winter displays.
