Zelkova serrata, i.e. Japanese candle elm bonsai in shohin size category. A completely outdoor plant that resembles the well-loved Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese elm) in several ways, with which it can easily be confused. Keeping Zelkova is not one of the most complicated plants. Choose a sunny place for it during the spring to autumn period, it tolerates direct sun well. In the scorching heat of summer, it is recommended to place it in partial shade. During this growth period, regular fertilization is an essential factor for the health of the plant and the nutrient content of the soil. For this, use Bonsai Focus or Biogold food cube, or Bio-green liquid fertilizer, which is also a foliar fertilizer. Zelkova also starts preparing for the winter rest period with the arrival of autumn. There is no need for nutrition in this one. Before the arrival of frost, a frost-free place must be chosen for the tree, where the temperature is between 0° and 10°C. Its pruning from early spring to late summer is most ideal and recommended to do it. In terms of soil, it prefers a neutral or slightly acidic environment. It can be a mixture of akadama+peat or a mixture of akadama+kiryuzuna. However, 100% akadama is also suitable for the Zelkovas. In the case of the soil, try to keep it moist and do not let it stand dry for a long time, because it does not like a dry environment that lasts for a long time.
