Zelkova serrata, commonly known as Japanese elm in a Japanese antifreeze pot. It is a deciduous tree with a straight habitus. This species is very popular in bonsai art. Japanese elm as an outdoor plant and relatively rich sunshine is important for this tree. Optimal for a place exposed to full morning sunlight and filtered afternoon sunlight. When exposed to scorching afternoon sun, the leaves tend to burn. If strong sunlight cannot be avoided, the use of a filter device is recommended. This tree should be protected from strong frosts whenever possible, especially if planted in a shallow bowl. With natural blankets we can protect the root ball or even overwinter in a cold store. You need less water in the colder months, but don't let the soil dry out. For growth, however, Zelkova should be watered regularly and not allow the root ball to dry out, be careful not to over-water the tree. If possible, avoid lime water, it does not tolerate well in the long run. Wiring should be do in early spring and during the summer months. Great care must be taken not to damage the thin branches that can be easily broken off because they are not very flexible. Growth requires a constant supply of nutrients. Biogold nutrient cubes or Matsu Bio-Green foliar fertilizer is recommended for organic fertilizer.
