In winter time, half-shade and ensure the protection of the root ball by using a natural covering material (straw or mulch)because frozen roots are incapable of watering and involve drying out the evergreen foliage. If the soil dries out, water it thoroughly, but do not keep the roots or planting medium constantly wet. In winter, it is recommended to water less, but never let the root ball dry completely. The roots do not like to stand in water for too long or in moist soil, as this can cause many diseases. Middle of spring to middle of summer is the ideal time for finer pruning. Be careful never to remove all the needles from a branch, as Spruce will be reluctant to form new buds on it. Fortunately, the only aspect that Spruces don’t worry too much about is the pH level. The water can be neutral, more alkaline or more acidic. However, we need to strive for a more granular planting medium, which is important for our pine because of its good water permeability, so Kiryuzuna or Akadama may be right for it. It is recommended to use liquid bonsai fertilizer (Fish-emulsion or Bio-Green) during the growing season for healthy development.
